Many in the Notes/Domino world have started working with XPages. TLCC wants to get the rest of you started! To motivate you, August is Learn XPages Month! There are many resources for XPages out in the blogosphere and Google world, most are short videos or tips on a specific issue. However, for new XPage developers, a well thought-out course with demonstrations and activities ready to be done in Domino Designer is the fastest way to get started.

How can TLCC help? If you are not sure what XPages are and just want a quick test drive, try TLCC's FREE Introduction to Domino Designer course. This course has a module that will get you started with how to use Domino Designer to create an XPage to display Domino documents. The course is taken using the Notes client and activities and demonstrations are done in Domino Designer.

Ready to take the plunge? TLCC's XPages course and related package will be specially priced until August 31st. TLCC's Developing XPages using Domino Designer 8.5 is a complete course that takes a deep dive into XPage development. Learn the basic building blocks of XPages, from controls to events to the JavaScript editor. All the XPage controls are covered. The available programming languages for XPages along with the various supporting libraries including the new @Functions and the Domino Object Model are covered in detail. Discover how Cascading Style Sheets are fully implemented in XPages along with an all new design element called Themes. Another new design element, Custom Controls, allows controls to be easily re-used on multiple XPages (just like a subform).

This course covers advanced techniques such as:
  • Combine a view and a document on one page with complete edit capabilities
  • Combine multiple documents or multiple views on a page
  • Create dynamic tables with repeat controls
  • Join data from different views and databases into one view
  • Filter views to show only certain categories or the results of a full-text search
  • Integrate Java and web services in XPages
  • Use the built-in AJAX functionality to enable type ahead and partial page refresh
  • Use a Repeat control to build dynamic tables
  • Display a responses-only column so it appears just like the Notes client
  • Enable Authors and Readers fields

This distance learning course, like all TLCC courses, includes many demonstrations and activities that you perform "live" in Domino Designer. No simulations or videos are used. You will get hands-on experience building XPages while learning at your own pace in your own home and/or office. A Domino server is not required and the course will install on your local system. Prerequisites for Developing XPages using Domino Designer 8.5:

TLCC suggests developers have a strong Notes and Domino development background before starting to learn XPages. In particular, knowledge of JavaScript is important since that is the key programming language in XPages. TLCC offers the JavaScript in Notes Domino 8.5 course which will cover JavaScript and how to use it in Notes and Domino applications. The JavaScript course and the Developing XPages using Domino Designer 8.5 course can be gotten together at a significant savings with the XPages and JavaScript for Domino 8.5 Package.

An understanding of the Notes and Domino object model is also important to an XPage developer. If you are already creating LotusScript or Java agents than you already understand the Domino Object Model. If not, than TLCC suggests gaining this experience. TLCC's Java courses will cover the Java programming language (which can be used in XPages), how to create Java agents in Domino Designer, and the Domino Object Model. The Java Programming for Notes Domino 8.5 Package contains both of TLCC's Java courses and is an excellent way to learn the Domino Object Model as well as to start developing your Java programming skills. TLCC also offers four LotusScript courses if you choose to go the LotusScript path.
